Liberty bridge (Szabadsag hid), Budapest

Posted by Petr (Rakovnik, Czech Republic) on 23 August 2007 in Cityscape & Urban.

In Budapest, there are 10 bridges connecting the former Buda and Pest cities. (There used to be one more - Kossut bridge - that was destroyed at the end of World War II together with all other but was never restored).

Out of the 10 bridges, 2 are solely rail bridges and the remaining 8 are used by pedestrians, cars and some by trams.

Liberty bridge is the third southernmost (or simply third from the bottom of Budapest ;-)). It was built between 1894 and 1896. The bridge is 333.6m long, 20.1m wide. The top of the four masts are decorated with large bronze statues of the Turul, a falcon-like bird, prominent in ancient Hungarian mythology.
